Severe thunderstorms swept across parts of the United States, bringing damaging winds and very large hail to several areas. In southeastern South Dakota and northwestern Iowa, hail reached nearly 2.75 inches in diameter—about the size of a baseball—damaging vehicles, roofs, crops, and other property. Other storms across the Midwest and Northeast also produced large hail, making the day a reminder that severe weather can develop quickly and become dangerous even as summer begins to wind down.
